Looking for a fabulous vintage shirt and a way to help the community at the same time? Look no further than the Island City’s not so hidden gem “Out of the Closet”. Nestled along Wilton Drive, Out of the Closet is the love child of Michael Weinstein.

Michael is president of the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) which opened its first location in Los Angeles to help provide funds to patients and patient families affected by the AIDS epidemic in the early 90’s.

After realizing that there were more people he could help, Weinstein brought his talents right here to our beautiful Island City.

Out of the Closet has been a staple on The Drive for the last decade. What is now categorized as the first of several South Florida locations, Out of the Closet has been a beacon for the community it’s meant to serve.

Out of the Closet thrift store

Best known for its pink exterior, Out of the Closet is the local thrift store. But it is also so much more.

Once inside the pink walls you will find a joyous staff and racks of gently worn clothes that scream possibility to every fashionista or thrift seeker that walks in. Beyond these racks lies the opportunity to find the perfect “new to you” coffee table that will fit perfectly in that space you’ve been saving, you know that space.

As a non profit, Out of the Closet relies on the generous donations it receives from members of the community to maintain its operations. Proceeds from the sales of donated items goes to provide jobs and helps fund the pharmacy and testing centers which offer discounted meds and provides FREE STD testing at many of its locations.

Even though the extreme urgency that spawned Out of the Closet has subsided thanks to people like Michael who have fought to protect and support those in the community affected by HIV/AIDS, there remains a need to continue educating and bringing awareness to the the public throughout South Florida which report one of the highest HIV/AIDS contraction rates in the country.

As the saying goes it’s better to give than to receive, but for Out of the Closet, they can only give when they receive – Please support Out of the Closet by bringing your donations to:
